Learning Areas

Mathematical Development

This area of development includes counting, sorting, matching, number recognition and recording and the creation of mathematical patterns. It also involves and understanding of number, shape, space and measures. This area also includes using correct mathematical language to describe position, size, shape etc.

We will encourage children to count objects and to join in counting and number rhymes and games and to help them recognise numbers from 1 to 10.

We will be encouraging problem solving through various activities and for them to develop mathematical ideas.

Activities will provide opportunities to gain an awareness of addition and subtraction and to compare different groups of objects.

Opportunities for children to use language such as more/less, big/little, over/under etc and for them to use it in the correct context. To recreate simple patterns and to follow a mathematical pattern.

Children will be encouraged to work with shapes, both 2D and 3D and to name them correctly.

Table top activities ie number lotto, matching bears, dice games to encourage number recognition and counting skills will be on offer.

Mathematical development will also be encouraged in physical games – ie positional maths – crawling under, climbing over, going through a tunnel etc.
