The Six Learning Areas
Knowledge & Understanding of the World
This area of learning introduces the child to history, geography, religious studies, science, information technology and communication technology.
We aim to give the children regular opportunities to investigate objects and materials and to find out about living things, objects and their environment. We will encourage them to notice similarities, differences, patterns and change and for them to record their findings in their own way. Questions will be encouraged to gain further knowledge to find out why things happen or how things work etc.
Children will be encouraged to build and construct using a wide variety of objects and selecting appropriate materials and tools and join various materials together in different ways to form 3D models and other designs.
There will be a wide range of electronic toys, learning aids and programmable toys to support their learning. Children will work on a computer and gain an understanding of mouse control.
We will be discussing past, present and future events in their lives and the lives of their families and friends. Children will also gain an awareness of their environment and the natural world. They will be encouraged to discuss the features which they like and dislike.
Children will also gain an awareness of their own and other cultures and beliefs. A wide range of items will show positive images, ie books, jigsaws and children will also sample foods from other cultures and be offered clothing to ‘dress up’ in. Many of the festivals will be celebrated within the pre-school ie Christmas, Easter, Eid, Diwali, Chinese New Year, St. Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day etc.
